Online Roulette Guide UK 2026: Rules, Bets and Odds
A beginner-friendly guide to online roulette — the wheel, the bets, the odds and why European beats American.

Roulette is one of the most recognisable casino games, and it translates beautifully online. The rules are simple, but knowing the bet types and odds helps you play with clear expectations. Here's the essentials.
The basics
You bet on where a ball will land on a spinning wheel of numbered pockets. European and French wheels have numbers 0–36; American wheels add a 00, which increases the house edge. Always prefer single-zero (European/French) roulette where you can.
Types of bets
- Inside bets: on specific numbers or small groups — lower chance, higher payouts (e.g. a single number pays 35:1).
- Outside bets: red/black, odd/even, high/low — close to even-money, higher chance of winning.
- Column & dozen bets: groups of 12 numbers, paying 2:1.
The odds, plainly
European roulette has a house edge of about 2.7% across all bets; American roulette roughly doubles it to 5.26% because of the extra 00. The "La Partage" or "En Prison" rules on some French tables can lower the edge on even-money bets further.
About betting systems
Systems like Martingale (doubling after a loss) are widely promoted but do not beat the house edge. They can quickly hit table limits or wipe out a bankroll, and chasing losses this way is a recognised gambling-harm warning sign. Each spin is independent and random.
Play it for fun
Roulette is best enjoyed as entertainment. Stick to European wheels, set a budget, and don't rely on any "system" to turn a profit.
