Is a Casino Bonus Worth It? How to Work Out the Real Value of a Welcome Offer
A bigger headline number is not a better bonus. One formula tells you what any welcome offer is really worth, and when you should decline it.

"100% up to £200" sounds twice as good as "100% up to £100". It often isn't. The value of a welcome bonus depends on how much you must bet to release it, the house edge of the games you bet on, and any cap on what you can withdraw. This guide gives you the one formula that cuts through the marketing, with worked examples under the UK's current 10x wagering cap.
The formula
Expected value ≈ Bonus − (Total stake required × House edge)
- Total stake required = wagering multiplier × bonus (or × deposit + bonus, if that is the base).
- House edge = 100% − RTP. A 96% slot has a 4% edge.
The expected value is what you would keep on average if you played the requirement through many times. It is not what will happen on any single attempt; variance is large and a time-limited offer can run out before you finish.
Worked examples
| Offer | Stake required | Expected cost at 96% RTP | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| £50 bonus, 10x bonus | £500 | £20 | +£30 |
| £50 bonus, 10x deposit + bonus (£50 deposit) | £1,000 | £40 | +£10 |
| £50 bonus, 35x (pre-2026 or offshore) | £1,750 | £70 | −£20 |
| £200 bonus, 10x, max cashout £100 | £2,000 | £80 | capped at £100, realistically ≈ +£20 |
| 50 wager-free spins at £0.10 | £0 | £0 | ≈ +£4.80 (50 × £0.10 × 96%) |
Two things stand out. First, the 10x cap has turned many UK offers from clearly negative to modestly positive on paper. Second, the maximum cashout cap destroys value faster than wagering does: a £200 bonus you can only ever withdraw £100 from is a £100 bonus with £2,000 of play attached.
Why the paper figure is a ceiling
- Variance. A high-volatility slot can lose the whole bonus before the requirement is met, far more often than the average suggests.
- Max bet. If you must stay under £5 a spin, £500 of play is at least 100 spins. At £2 it is 250. Time limits bite.
- Contribution. Playing a 10%-weighted game multiplies the stake required by ten.
- RTP version. The same slot can be configured at 96%, 95% or 94% by the operator. Check the info panel.

When to decline the bonus
Most UK casinos let you opt out of the welcome offer when you deposit. Decline it if you want to withdraw winnings quickly, if your usual stake is above the max bet, if you mostly play live or table games, or if the cashout cap is small. A bonus you cannot complete is a cost, not a gift.
A quick checklist
- Multiplier and base (bonus only, or deposit + bonus).
- Max cashout from the bonus.
- Contribution of the games you play.
- Max bet and expiry.
- The RTP version of the slot you will use.

Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for casino bonus value?
Value ≈ Bonus − (Total stake required × House edge). Total stake = wagering multiplier × bonus; house edge = 100% − the game's RTP. A £50 bonus at 10x on a 96% RTP slot is £50 − (£500 × 4%) = £30 of expected value.
Can a casino bonus have positive expected value?
On paper, yes, when the wagering multiplier times the house edge is below 1. At 10x on a 96% slot that holds. In practice, variance, max-bet rules, time limits and cashout caps mean many players do not complete the requirement, so treat the figure as a ceiling, not a promise.
Is a no-wagering bonus always better?
Usually. Fifty wager-free spins worth £0.10 each on a 96% slot are worth about £4.80 of cash with no further play required. A £200 match at 10x with a £100 cashout cap can be worth less. Compare value, not headline size.
Should I ever decline the welcome bonus?
Yes, if you mainly play table or live games (low contribution), if you want to withdraw quickly, if the max bet is below your usual stake, or if the cashout cap is small. Most UK casinos let you opt out at deposit.
Does a 94% RTP version of a slot change the value?
Yes. Operators can run lower-RTP builds of the same slot. At 94% the house edge is 6%, so a 10x requirement on a £50 bonus costs £30 instead of £20. Check the RTP in the game's info panel.
